DNS - Domain Name System - is arguably the most critical part of any TCP/IP network (apart from the physical connections).  Without a properly configured DNS environment, it is all but impossible to connect to other networks.

Unfortunately, DNS is also one of the most improperly configured network services - a primary cause of not only network-specific problems, but also Internet-wide problems as well!

Many of the problems arise from some reasonable, though incorrect, assumptions.  This document will try to clarify many of the issues surrounding DNS and provide guidelines for proper DNS configuration.

This document will begin with an simple overview of DNS, and some general concepts that can be applied to any DNS implementation.  Following these guidelines will help you setup and maintain a working DNS environment - and hopefully increase the morale of your users.

A note on DNS servers:  after many trials and headaches, the DNS server utilized by AMFES is djbdns.  There are several other DNS software packages available - djbdns is the product that has proven itself both reliable and predictable in our environment.  For this reason, we can offer insights into the operation of this server in particular - and do so.  If, for whatever reason, you find it necessary or desirable to utilize a different software and would like assistance - ask anyway.  We'll try to help.
